Today is Amy’s day.
Her big thing for this trip is to go fossicking for gemstones. A year or so ago we had planned an outback trip with some friends that included going across the Plenty Highway from Boulia to Alice Springs. Amy, our budding geologist, was quite taken with the idea of visiting a place called Gemtree and finding lots of gems. That trip didn’t go ahead, but Amy’s still keen to fossick for riches.
I don’t know that Opalton was exactly what she had in mind. A 100km drive on a dirt road to the middle of nowhere. Opalton used to have a little store but we discovered this is now part of someone’s lounge room. Anyway, after a false start or two we did manage to find a spot amongst the ironstone to do some fossicking and I’m very happy to say that we all found some cool fragments of Opal (or Opal looking rocks).
Amy thoroughly enjoyed herself. I think Liam’s favourite part of the day was looking through an old burnt out claim and looking at the old caravan there.
Back at camp, the kids hung out with their new friends Yumi, Babette & Orlando from Sydney.
Cameron’s highlight was using our brand new camp oven and cooking “The best camp oven stew” ever!!!! Even the kids scored it 10 out 10.
