Ormiston Gorge

After leaving Alice Springs we drove out along Larapinta Drive heading toward the Mereenie Loop.

Larapinta Drive

The mountains around here are amazing! We stopped for lunch at Simpsons Gap.

We had planned to stay at Ellery Big Hole for the night but we didn’t really like the camp ground; small sites with lots of bollards. The swimming hole was beautiful but very cold; even the kids wouldn’t swim.

Next stop was the Ochre Pits. It was very cool looking at the ochre cliffs.

You could see all the cut marks where the local aboriginals had been mining ochre in the past.

We headed onto Ormiston Gorge campsite. Pretty full, but we managed to get a decent, if a bit rocky, site. Went for a wander to the Gorge and swimming hole. Another amazing spot.

We let the kids  have some freedom and gave them and their lizards an extra 20 minutes on the beach near the swimming hole.  They made it back to camp right on time!!!

Really windy night, Cameron and I got almost no sleep. I hate camper trailer rattles!!!

Cameron & I are both rather bleary eyed this morning. A lot of coffee needed to get moving. Conscripted the kids to help with pack up. Much more pleasant pack up than usual. I think the kids actually enjoyed having jobs.

Spent an hour or so doing the Ghost Gum walk, which took us up to a look out and then down into the Gorge.

Easy walk – we’ve all got a lot more stamina than before the trip. I’ve decided I need some of the purple/pink stripey rocks from Ormiston Gorge for my garden at home. Somehow I don’t think they will sell them at my local landscape supplier. 🙂
